Lansing-Area Public School Educator Amy Dunlap Named Education Champion of the Month
Amy Dunlap Honored for Her Work with Students, Advocacy for Online Learners During Coronavirus Pandemic
LANSING –The Great Lakes Education Project (GLEP) today celebrated Amy Dunlap, an educator and leader at Okemos-based Michigan Connections Academy, for her work with public school students during the COVID-19 pandemic, and her passionate advocacy for online public school learners.
Dunlap was presented with GLEP’s “Education Champion of the Month” award in recognition of her commitment to kids and the sacrifices she makes regularly to defend their right to a quality public school education.
“Ms. Dunlap is a great advocate for kids and an even better teacher,” said GLEP Executive Director Beth DeShone. “Her work with students at Connections Academy, the help she offers other public school teachers, and the passion she brings to advocacy for Michigan kids make her the kind of teacher students remember – and their parents do, too.”
In addition to her work at Connections Academy, Ms. Dunlap is a leader with the Michigan Chapter of the National Coalition for Public School Options, an organization of teachers and parents who engage with state and local policymakers to support local students.
When she’s not working with students or assisting other teachers, Ms. Dunlap can often be found at the state Capitol in Lansing, speaking directly to lawmakers about the importance of education policies that focus first on the needs of Michigan students.
“Schools exist to educate students, and those students should always come first,” said Dunlap. “This recognition from GLEP is a great honor because it spins out of a great responsibility – helping kids succeed.”
