LANSING – Great Lakes Education Project Executive Director Beth DeShone today asked the state Senate to reject bills being introduced by Senators Dayna Polehanki, Darrin Camilleri and others that target public charter schools without making similar demands of their traditional public school counterparts.
The legislation targets public charter schools with new costs, regulations and requirements that are not placed on traditional public schools, exacerbating inequalities between Michigan students based solely on the public school parents choose for their children.
“Dayna Polehanki and Darrin Camilleri’s attack on public school teachers, public school students, and the parents who choose public charter schools to educate their children is an attack on over 100,000 Michiganders,” said DeShone. “Parents and teachers aren’t fooled for a second. They know Senate Democrats bills are designed to limit the effectiveness of public charter schools and the public school teachers in each one of their classrooms by tying them up in red tape and regulations not-at-all related to classroom learning or education. They are threatened by parental engagement in education and better outcomes for families who choose the education model that works for them.”
