GLEP: Whitmer Vetoes Health and Safety Funding for Some Michigan Kids
LANSING – The Great Lakes Education Project Executive Director Beth DeShone provided the following comment today, after Governor Gretchen Whitmer used a line-item veto in the budget to eliminate health and safety funding for some students across Michigan:
“Governor Whitmer’s veto today was nothing more than political gamesmanship, in the middle of a global pandemic. The state mandates all schools deliver critical health and safety protections for our kids – things like safety drills, keeping immunization records and more. For years, the state has recognized the importance of these measures for the wellbeing of all students and their communities, and in recent years has provided funding so private schools too can effectively deliver these services. Whitmer’s veto sends the worst possible signal – that some students’ health and safety is worth more than that of others.”
